Our Trustees are responsible for the governance and efficiency of our service. Their mix of knowledge and skills supports our work and helps drive the organisation forward at a strategic level.     David has spent 35 years in the furniture business, selling his business in 2009 and is now semi retired. He now splits his time between 4 charities and is a consultant for The Cranfield Trust, a charity that places business people into charities that are struggling or have a specific project to complete.


    David was drawn to BCD having been approached by a colleague and has been inspired by the great work the charity does quietly and behind closed doors.


    Rebecca is a Family Lawyer at a national firm specialising in matters involving children and domestic abuse. Within her role, she acts as an advocate for vulnerable adults and children and works with other national charities to support them. Whilst training to be a Solicitor, she also worked as a volunteer with a domestic abuse charity organisation in North Manchester supporting women and children fleeing abusive homes.


    She continues to actively work with numerous organisations nationally as well as within the Leeds area. Rebecca has a passion for promoting change in the way we support adults and children who have been affected by domestic violence and abuse and continues to work both within her professional role and her charity links to support and achieve these changes.


    Dave has worked in banking since leaving school at 16, supporting owner-managed businesses across the Yorkshire region and currently based in Leeds. Married to Angela with two daughters, Dave also supports Angela and Rebecca, their eldest daughter, run the family business based in Harrogate. Spare time is spent listening to music, jogging, gardening and walking their two King Charles spaniels, Ella and Beau.


    Natalie Saunders is a Solicitor with 13 years’ experience specialising in HR and employment law. One of the most satisfying parts of her job was helping individuals transition out of difficult situations, for example where they were being bullied or discriminated against or being unfairly dismissed; her work was driven by the belief that life is too short to be miserable at work. She is passionate about helping individuals be their best selves – as this then drives a sense of fulfilment, engagement and purpose. Ultimately it also drives organisational success.


    Natalie is also a former HR Director with 11 years of operational HR experience. She’s worked within large organisations but also with (and for) smaller businesses; she founded and grew her own successful professional services business and was one of Yorkshire Business Insider’s “top 42 under 42” entrepreneurs in 2012. A Leeds girl born and bred, she is married and has 2 children and loves the fact that BCD supports men as well as women and children who have experienced domestic violence and abuse.


    Jacqui Withnell brings a wealth of experience to the Board of BCD. Jacqui has over 35 years’ experience in the commercial interiors industry having worked in design, sales strategy and marketing. The last 18 years have been spent as either a business owner or in senior managerial and leadership roles.


    Jacqui now runs her own commercial furniture practice working primarily with growing and changing SME’s.


    She has an MSc in Leadership and Change management and through her skills and interest in health and wellbeing assists clients to create a better day at work. She does this by working with a business and its teams to enhance the working environment to ensure people are happy, motivated and engaged. The research Jacqui has been involved in with leading organisations shows that the biggest cost to a business is its people but more crucially, it’s a bottom line issue where profits are being lost through presenteeism, this is where staff are present but disengaged for a variety of reasons.


    Jacqui creates environments that generate comfort, function and emotional wellbeing which inspire people to do their best work as well as increase productivity, satisfaction and engagement.


    In her spare time, Jacqui teaches pilates, nutrition and weight management on a pro bono basis with wives of farmers in the small village where she lives with her husband and 3 working dogs.



    Jessica spends most of her spare time walking her rescue dog and taking her on new adventures. Jessica loves reading, especially thrillers and fictional fantasy and  has a stack awaiting the time to dive in! She also enjoys martial arts, baking, sewing and travelling.


    Ruth first became a trustee of Behind Closed Doors in 2005. At that time she worked as a family solicitor with a specialism in supporting victims of domestic abuse. Ruth served as Chair of the organisation between 2006 and 2012 and then left the board to spend time with her young family and has rejoined as a trustee in 2017.


    Ruth's particular focus is supporting the development of the trustee board and she has also spent some time running a charity as CEO and is currently working in a Local Authority in the area of supported housing commissioning and policy development.
